a Difference Day
Held each year on the fourth Saturday of October
On Saturday, October 22, 2011, Volunteer McKinney Center hosted the annual national service day- McKinney Make A Difference sponsored this year by McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC). For the past twelve years VMC has partnered with several organizations, businesses, churches, schools and volunteer groups in the community to complete service projects the 4th Saturday of October.
Hundreds of volunteers gathered at several locations to volunteer their time to make a difference in their community. Volunteers completed Christmas decorations for Visiting Nurses Association's hospice patients, made craft projects for local nursing home residents, completed greeting cards for soldiers and volunteers, and worked on special items for Community Lifeline Center and the McKinney Family YMCA.
Other volunteers were involved with projects at ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship, Chestnut Square Historical Village, Heard Natural Science Museum, Children and Community Health Clinic, the City of McKinney and Operation Appreciation. Several volunteer groups will host special parties at some of our local assisted living facilities.
This year the McKinney Chamber Leadership Class took the lead on a special project at the Holy Family School where over 60 volunteers landscaped, updated the playground, striped the parking lot, built a computer table and worked on raised beds for the children’s garden!
Others sorted and stocked hundreds of canned food at the Community Food Pantry collected the prior week by several elementary students at their schools throughout McKinney.
Thanks to all of you who participated and the difference you made in our community!
Special thanks to McKinney Community Development Corporation for sponsoring this years event.
